“The whisper of forest” takes the tree hole as the prototype, creating a secret place in which one can pour out his troubles. The bamboo structure carries out the low-tech practice to the end.The framework is simple, the outer skin is first made of bamboo strips, and then the bamboo branches are inserted to form a simple appearance and a dreamlike shape and space effect. Natural irregular circular openings make light and clouds, branches and shadows reflect into the internal space, forming the communication and penetration between nature and structures. Two different atmosphere of flower border, the combination of flower border and structure, using landscape narrative to form space change, causes the mood fluctuation of visitors: from tension and curiosity, to open heart, and then to suddenly open up. This project won the first prize of the third ” Beijing Forestry University International Garden Construction Festival” Design Competition in 2020, and the first prize of Chengdu Park City International Garden Festival and the third Beijing Forestry University International Garden Construction Festival in 2020.

The theme of this garden construction is “secret garden”. We believe that “secret” and “voice” are the secrets of everyone’s heart. Therefore, we hope that the design can mobilize users to share their “secrets” and “inner voice”. “Tree hole” is a synonym for listening to the voice of the heart. Inspired by “tree hole”, we hope to create a mysterious space to listen to all kinds of troubles, communicate and meditate, and help the lost find themselves. So we wrote a script like this:Mr. rabbit, a designer who faces the pressure of life and worries about his work in the city, works hard every day to design, draw and change plans. He forgets the significance of his existence and gradually becomes an island in the city. Life is no longer happy, and there is no inspiration for design.Until this day, he found that the high-rise city buildings outside the window gradually turned into a dark forest, and the subway disappeared. He began to take a nap in the dark woods. In his dream, a mysterious and secure tree hole appeared. After the nap, he found himself back in the forest full of sunshine. In a reed grass, he found the tree hole being built. He sat opposite the happy rabbit who built a tree hole and lived in the forest. He poured out his heart and released all kinds of worries that had been suppressed in his heart for a long time. When Mr. rabbit walked out of the tree hole, he found that the happy rabbit was his former self. Mr. rabbit finally found his lost self and found another beautiful garden in front of him.

It is very interesting that after the completion of the scheme construction, we heard many tourists’ interpretation of what the shape looks like: like rabbits, like bird’s nest, like chestnuts, like squirrels… Simple, and with childlike facade, which makes tourists have many lovely associations. The original idea of the scheme is to take two big trees as the prototype, and the trunk deduces into the enclosed space. The circular dome is formed by winding and extending to form the top interface. In order to create the mysterious feeling of simplicity and simplicity, the overall shape of bamboo structure is round, solid and strong, which makes the facade look opaque, but it is full of primitive, primitive and fantastic colors. In space, each interface enhances the enclosure, which makes it form a weak passage space, enhances the visitors’ stay in the tree hole, and points out the opportunity to sit down and “talk”. The irregular circle of nature opens a hole upward, so that light and clouds, branches and shadows reflect into the internal space, forming the communication and penetration between nature and structures, in which people can communicate, rest, talk and meditate.

The “tree hole” faces the lawn and road, is backed by the sculpture in the park, and is surrounded by other bamboo gardens. Based on these site factors, we believe that the rough opening will only bring the disorganization of viewpoints, and our garden itself should be permeated into the existing natural landscape. Therefore, we opened three openings according to the line of sight. You can stand on tiptoe to overlook the corner of the sculpture in the park, just like the beauty of reverie presented by ” embrace half pipa hide surface still “. You can look up into the sky and bask in the warm sunshine. You can also peek out to enjoy the scenery and listen to the wind blowing in the forest from the edge of the cave.

Plant design is an important method to form a complete narrative and set off the atmosphere in the garden. The overall scheme uses a one-way flow line to connect the three zones of “Exploring wonderland”, “Confiding secrets in tree holes” and ” Walking through the garden “. We use different plant configuration techniques to guide visitors to produce emotional ups and downs of “tension and curiosity – open your heart – suddenly enlightened”, forming a complete landscape sequence and spatial changes. The “Exploring wonderland ” uses ornamental grass as the main plant, including Imperata cylindrica (L.) Beauv. and Miscanthus sinensis cv., etc., to foil the simplicity of the structure and set off the mysterious atmosphere of exploration. ” Confiding secrets in tree holes ” spreads from the bottom of the structure from the outside to the inside through climbing plants such as Verbena hybrida Voss to achieve the penetration of the space inside and outside. “Tree hole talk area” spreads from the bottom of the structure from the outside to the inside through climbing plants such as Cherry blossom to achieve the penetration of the space inside and outside. The ” Walking through the garden ” is composed of purple, blue and yellow ornamental flowers with high and low levels, forming a flower border, which creates a feeling of suddenly being enlightened out of the tree hole for visitors.

The competition limitation of bamboo garden prompts us to consider fully the characteristics of bamboo itself. Bamboo branch is the part of the bamboo that grows upward and outward laterally. It is characterized by a large number of fine branches and luxuriant leaves. It is often used to make besoms or to board the roof. We have innovatively woven bamboo branches into the skin made of bamboo strips, so the disordered bamboo branches and the ordered bamboo strips are woven together as two main materials. From the outside, we can see the hairy tree holes sleeping in the forest, which looks primitive and mysterious. Entering the tree hole, Mottled light and shadow penetrated into the interior of the space, as if sprinkled with a layer of broken gold. Thus, the design forms a primitive and mysterious sense of antiquity and fantasy.
