The corridor in the flower field is made of bamboo with a unique shape, full of poetic and natural sense. The design takes advantage of the bamboo’s flexibility and bending resistance. The free curved roof matches the beautiful mountains of Yu Village perfectly. The top of the intersection of “bamboo branches” is raised to a circular lighting opening, which interrupts the closed roof and allows sunlight, air, and rain to enter inside. The opening blurs the inside and outside boundaries. This project won the third prize in the Second National College Bamboo Design and Construction Competition, 2019.

The site is located on the road which goes through the flower field in the entrance area of Yu Village. The road is straight and slightly monotonous, without stop and experience places. The flowers and lotus in the ponds are beautiful, but you do not know on where to focus. The site will be pretty hot without any shading shelters insummer. In addition, the site is so close to another college’s structure, how to respond is also an important issue we need to solve.

“The bamboo painters asked me how to avoid blurring when splashing ink. My answer is thinning branches with light ink, they do not need to be supported by others.” The project is inspired by the traditional Chinese ink-bamboo painting, the image of dancing bamboo branches.

We designed a dancing bamboo corridor to break the existing rigid road. The promenade winds around the road and extends several branches into the flower field to strengthen the interaction between visitors and flowers. Due to the limited space of the roadside for the foundation of the corridor, we adopted a thin grids shell structure with bamboo branches shading, and opened several skylights at the nodes.

The quadrangular grid directly “woven” from the original bamboo constitutes a complex spatial curved grid structure. The average size of the grid is approximately 600 mm square. The meridians of the grid converge into cluster columns before landing, supporting the undulating tops and covering the roof with bamboo branches.

Tourists walk or take the battery car to enter. At first, they feel relatively low and narrow. After walking for dozens of steps, and visitors meet a sudden bright. Inside and outside, dark and bright, the corridor creates a kind of space experience like traveling in a Chinese classical garden. The “branch” in the flower field will provide a rest platform and seats for tourists to rest and stay. The opening is like a view frame, which leads people’s sight to the beautiful scenery.
