iDA Workplace recently finished the office design for Pfizer Upjohn, the biopharmaceutical company, located in Shanghai, China.

iDA’s design for Pfizer Upjohn’s global headquarters in Shanghai not only retains a distinctly American style of informality and flexibility, but subtly integrates Chinese elements to shape a workplace that neatly fuses two cultures.

The first view when entering the workspace is the clean white lines and basic shapes of the front desk. The design is tidy and uncluttered to create feelings of freshness.

A Chinese-styled screen features a pattern that evokes the structure of molecules. This detail ingenuously displays the pharmaceutical background of Upjohn to first time visitors. Just past the reception area, the space opens into a collaborative space that offers casual work settings and social connection to all users. This easily accessible space encourages employees to engage in internal and external collaborations.

The colors used throughout the office space are consistent with Pfizer’s branding, which is lively and modern, yet mature. The client was clear that they wanted to integrate aspects of traditional Chinese culture, so iDA included nods to “qi” and Feng Shui throughout the design. Art installations and other aesthetic cues further integrate Chinese culture into the overall modern design.

The spacious meeting areas are where the Chinese cultural elements shine through. Screens, carpets, and wall decorations bring to mind Chinese gardens and pavilions, creating a reprieve from the bustling metropolis of Shanghai.
