New York has transformed a former pier into a new green space for the city. Pier 26, in Tribeca neighbourhood, is spread over one hectare on the Hudson River. It is the first pier in New York dedicated to river ecology and is a new space for recreation and relaxation, whilst also serving an educational purpose for the entire local community. The park’s design, by The Olin Studio in collaboration with our North American partner Landscape Forms, is inspired by the natural dynamics of the river estuary, incorporating multiple levels to create different environments via walkways and platforms.
A section of the pier consists of a large wooden platform that, at the westernmost end, joins with the north and south side walkways and rises above the river, providing spectacular views of the city and New Jersey. On the inner section, another platform rises 15 feet above the intertidal zone of the estuary and is accessible at low tides. On the north side, a path runs along a series of small ecological habitats until arriving at the river and features woodlands, coastal grassland, maritime scrub and wetland, reproducing the original biodiversity of Manhattan Island.
Urban elements with durability in marine environments Well-differentiated recreational and relaxation areas are incorporated: a grassed area on the south side, a sports court in the centre and two sheds with swings.
The perimeter of the pier features stands, benches, stools and deck chairs that are conducive to reading, interaction and contemplation. The materials used on the project are high density wood and stainless steel, both of which are highly resistant in marine environments.
The Harpo chaise longue, designed by Miguel Milá and Gonzalo Milá and edited by Urbidermis, blends in with the wooden decking of the design and encourages relaxation in various areas, such as the walkways on both sides of the pier and the viewpoint at the western end. Its simple design characteristics, ergonomic form and comfort invite you to take a break and imbue the space with a feeling of serenity.
