最近，英国有五位设计专业的毕业生获得了设计比赛的大奖，在英国西南部设计一座艺术家住宅。住宅名为“天文台”，分为两部分：书房和工作室。书房在后面，属于私人空间，里面有折叠床和必要的设施。工作室就比较开放，为艺术家提供了和公众交流的平台。这两大部分都能360度自由旋转，给住户提供开阔的视野，也为艺术家和公众的互动提供了便利。

房子的旋转装置是钢制的底座，连接着每一处结构的底面，比较牢固。这个底座上有转动轴和转动带，实现了房子的移动。这部分也有可能换成滚珠轴承装置。

住房将采用木质结构，木炭覆面，使用“瘦日本雪松”技术，这样的话，能延长木材的使用期。

“天文台”住房会从四个不同的地点开工，穿越了英国的西南部，能容纳12名艺术家。设计团队受到了Feilden Clegg Bradley工作室和Jane Wernick事务所的支持。设计公司、SPUD客户和这些毕业生会通力合作，共建项目。预计在今年的11月1日，初期的结构可以建成。

Five young design graduates based in Britain have recently won a competition to design an artist’s residency in the south-western region of the United Kingdom. Titled “The Observatories,” these residences are split into two separate volumes: a study and a workshop. Artists will be able to live in the private back section of the study, which has a fold-out bed and necessary amenities. The workshop will be more open, allowing artists to teach and engage with the public. Both volumes are capable of rotating 360 degrees, giving residents a fresh frame of view, and facilitating interaction between these residents and passerby.The rotation mechanism is a steel base connected to the underside of each structure. This base has steel chasers fixed to it which fit into a steel track on the building’s footing. These chasers turn within the track, allowing movement. An alternative design using ball bearings is also being considered.

The buildings themselves will be constructed of timber framing, and will be clad in charred timber produced through the Japanese “Shou Sugi” technique. This method will extend the longevity of the wood.

The Observatories’ structures will be erected in four different locations across the southwest of the UK, and will host 12 artists for two month periods over the course of two years. The design team is supported by both Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio and Jane Wernick Associates. Design firm and client SPUD will work with the graduates to construct the project. The first set of structures is expected to be completed by November 1st of this year.
