Wuweijian clubhouse is located in top of building #23, Junxi Taihe Palace. It is on east of Huifeng Lake Park and next to the southern river landscape area of the Palace. The hole area (interior plus outdoor area) is about 800 m2 merged by two duplex apartments. It is a private clubhouse with gallery, meeting rooms, bedrooms, living room and types of dining rooms. The client gives an open theme for this space, they hope it combines art and catering reception function together, also it is a new space model of the commercial space market.

Back to the origin of the space design, we propose some questions: How to understand the concept of a new space model combining art and commercial attributes? What is the ideal living environment? How to define the boundary of private space and public space?

Art is abstract, nature is concrete. Chinese traditional paintings usually present natural houses, trees, flowers and rivers through artistic technique, the author showed us imaginary spaces. We hope that this space could be alive and it is like a landscape painting on the way. In this type of space, people could walk around freely and also stop and admire. Not only could they wander in the ‘forest’ with a group of friends, but also enjoy long-lost leisure by themselves.

Therefore, for this project, we would like to insert art and the natural environment together in living spaces. We tried to weaken the boundary between interior and outdoor. We used the design methods in the field of fine art, architecture, and landscape to make a living status accompanied with plants, mountains, and rivers.

The different three colors: black, white and wood colors are distributed to three different types of spaces: nature, art and living spaces. They mixed together in this project. We placed different scale landscape spaces on the vanishing points of the sight, and we hid the “Pingting” which means small courtyard in these points, we hid “House” which is directed to the bedroom in landscape spaces, and we placed “Gallery” for white art spaces between the boundary of nature and living. Finally, it presents a situation that is full of natural, comfortable, coincident and relaxing feelings.

The requirements look contradictory, the opposites are art and life, public and spaces, social and being alone. We gave intentions to different spaces by different colors, different heights and lights to get the sense of boundary and continuing flow in the public spaces as well as the safe and private spaces.

We focused on the cross-connecting horizontal and vertical flow, such as the end of the entrance door room, the edge of the restaurant and gallery, and the staircase room. For these three spaces, we opened the floor to make the vertical channel space and introduced “forestry courtyard landscape” here. These spaces could extend the endlessness of the sight, and the user’s flow line must pass them. They stress the natural atmosphere and guide the conversion of different spaces.

We designed the vertical courtyard on the traffic nodes. They could lead to transform the special sight. We made holes in the wall between neighbour rooms to get beautiful scenes that could make a rich spatial level. We extended the palace landscape through the windows, and adjusted the size of other interfered windows. We planted trees and fences to optimize the feelings in some private spaces, also the landscape supports users to enjoy the natural elements.

Users could look down the tea room courtyard in the 2nd floor outdoor courtyard, to get an unbelievable landscape appreciative perspective. We moved down the top part of the window size of the gallery rest area to occlude the tall buildings in the distance and remain the closer lotus pond landscape.

For the restaurant area, we occlude the north buildings by artificial bamboo grid windows, keep the sunlight getting through the west and south windows to see better scenes for Huifeng Lake. The Japanese food restaurant lowers the height of dining and the height of the view, at the same time the landscape window height. While dining, users could appreciate the courtyard that triggers the imagination of being infinitely in the natural garden.

Under the staircase we designed green spaces to respond to the courtyard next to the restaurant. We installed a window and set up a same width pond out of and close to the window to utilize the natural light that could be reflected into the interior.

There is a lot of mini-balcony surrounded by the top floor. We planted trees and put fences to protect privacy, and the beautiful natural landscape can be seen through the windows.

In addition to the ornamental courtyard, there are some functional courtyard spaces. We proposed different strategies depending on different environments. In the west outdoor courtyard, we defined it to be a leisure space for a party and BBQ. Users still could overlook the Huifeng Lake in the distance and watch paintings from the gallery through windows. On the east of the living room is a “private garden” courtyard, there is a flower field with hemerocallis, pennisetum and ophiopogon japonicus. The colors are changing during different seasons. Users could lie on the sofa talking with friends and fire with brazier for warming in the winter. Next to the main bedroom is the northeast outdoor courtyard where there are types of arbor, it is like a quiet and tiny forest for staying alone.

"People in the world think the best mountains and river landscapes could be arrived at easily, could be watched to some extent, could be wandered somewhere and even could live comfortably. But just arriving and overlooking can’t compare to travelling and living in it.” said by Guo Xi who was the painting and calligraphy critic in Song Dynasty.
This project utilized black and white colors to define the mountain, forest, cloud and sea. The ends of the sight are different sizes of landscape, the wood color represents the living space hiding in the landscape. The distribution of the spaces is like a poem or painting scroll. Courtyard, gallery, living space compose this space and mix with each other to make users get rich feelings. We developed the “WUWEI” which is the concept of following the natural real world and live by ourselves.
