Location: Niels Hemmingsens Gade 12, 1153 København, Denmark
Design, Brand: Normann Copenhagen
The Danish design company has repurposed an old printing house dating back to 1936 for its new three-level workspace and flagship store.
Key features
Integrating its modern furniture collections within the site's raw architecture, Normann Copenhagen has created an overall scheme that changes character from floor to floor. This is in part thanks to the studio's use of colour, which ranges from mint green and shades of nude to ruby reds and azure blues. Working with the overall theme of 'reinvention', the designers have capitalized on the building's original features by re-exposing all its reinforced concrete beams and pairing them with a material palette of marble, mirrored surfaces, stainless steel, glossy foam and, of course, the textural richness of the brand's own furnishings. Alongside chandelier-like pendants made from recycled paper, the latter also provides the necessary acoustic properties to counteract the potential for sound to echo throughout the space.
As well as hosting a showroom, design studio, and workshop where designers can craft new ideas, a courtyard gallery and a rooftop eatery serve as versatile areas for hosting events and exhibitions with sweeping views of Copenhagen's colourful houses and verdant skyline. Meanwhile, a neutral yet eye-catching series of bright white awnings attract passersby from the street level.
Frame's take
Nowadays, the offices of a brand are as much an insight into its vision as its website, its catalogue, social media or even its product. As well as creating an effective environment in which to work, these spaces have become a marketing exercise for furniture companies and design studios to express their ethos. Normann Copenhagen's new headquarters is an exemplar of this as it exhibits well-known favourites while teasing a range of freshly launched products (all of which speak to its knack for creating timeless designs). Set within striking, almost monolithic interiors and a building with a captivating history, it provides the perfect backdrop for customers to experience the brand too.
