Milan Design Week has officially kicked off. In the lead up, we’ve rounded up some of the most anticipated events. Here are ten more to add to your list to make the most of your time in the Italian design capital.

FORMS & TEXTURES

Mas Creations by Masquespacio

In the Forms & Textures exhibition, interior and product design studio Masquespacio will explore the boundaries between functional design and artistic features, urging visitors to question what defines if an object is considered a work of art or just a design.

FUTURE PERFECT

UNStudio together with F.FRI, YAC, Object Carpet and Kvadrat

The Future Perfect project presents a design collection of ’(extra)ordinary objects’ based on the fashion textile design archive of the Fashion Research Italy Foundation. Combining, overwriting and altering historic prints and patterns, outdated textile and carpet collections are given a new lease on life through a circular approach that minimizes reproduction and maximizes recycling. The Milan exhibition will show how fashion patterns can be transformed into an immersive spatial design and take on completely new forms and functions.

MONUMENTAL WONDERSSolidNaturexOMAxSabine Marcelis

Making it’s Milan debut, natural stone brand SolidNature tasked OMA with the design of its exhibition at Alcova, which will feature newly commissioned pieces by Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis and the architecture firm. Across five rooms, immersive installations will show visitors the potential of the brand’s impressive roster of materials.

CERTOSA INITIATIVE

Beyond SpacexOrganisation in Design

Beyond Space and Organisation in Design have joined forces to launch the Certosa Initiative, which will bring together emerging talents and respected global brands in a 10,000-sq-m post industrial playground. Audio-visual artist Boris Acket collaborated with Beyond Space on the exhibition’s scenography, which will feature 12 cubes of light that ’mutate’ during the day.

SUPERBLOOMRIOS

Another newcomer to Milan Design Week, Rios presents the installation Superbloom, which replicates the natural yet fleeting occurrence of a Southern California superbloom. Visitors are guided through three sensory-rich rooms, each simulating a biological process.

THINKING DESIGN, MAKING DESIGN

Issey Miyake x Tatsuo Miyajima

Revealing the thinking and making processes behind the collaboration between contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima and Issey Miyake, Thinking Design, Making Design will present an installation that gives insight into the participatory project.

THE FLOW OF SEASONS

Grand Seiko

Historic Japanese watch manufacturer Grand Seiko will open a pop-up space in the heart of the Brera district, where they will serve visitors with ’an immersive experience dedicated to the passing of the four seasons’.

HERMÈS MAISON

Hermès

The quest for lightness will be at the heart of Hermès Maison’s Milan presentation. The brand’s textile-rich objects for the home will be showcased inside four structures reminiscent of water towers. Made of wood and covered with translucent coloured paper, they will act as beacons of light.

Temenos

Studiopepe xGalerie Philia

Inside the industrial Necchi factory in Milan’s Baranzate district MDW visitors will encounter a temple-like cylindrical structure housing the first collectible design objects by Italian duo Studiopepe conceived for Galerie Philia. Inspired by anthropology and informed by a study of artifacts from ancient cultures, the immersive experience will recall the circular dimensions of ancient sacral monuments, such as Stonehenge and the dome of the Pantheon.

OBJETS NOMADESLouis Vuitton

At a specially designed exhibition space in the iconic Garage Traversi, Louis Vuitton will celebrate ten years of its Objets Nomades collection, featuring travel-inspired furniture and objects made in collaboration with internationally renowned designers like Atelier Oï, the Campana Brothers and Raw Edges.
