How do you turn an ordinary grey concrete-framed 1960s building into stylish and contemporary office premises? Just/Burgeff Architects gave one answer in this project: Following an expert opinion procedure, this ensemble at Wöhlerstrasse 6-10 in the Westend-Süd district of Frankfurt was given a comprehensive architectural and energy upgrade.
The original cladding of precast concrete was replaced by large-format panels of finely nuanced Kanfanar limestone. Floor-length windows with narrow, anthracite-colored profiles – set back slightly from the facade plane – emphasize the distinctive grid pattern and give depth to the building's outward appearance.
A simple canopy with an illuminated soffit extends over the gold-colored entrance door, providing an elegant and welcoming prelude to the foyer. The stone tiles continuing into the foyer transport the new quality of the exterior into the interior.
Modest in size – to maximize space versatility in the office floors – the foyer reveals its qualities in the detail: in the Nero Tempesta portal around the elevator, a well designed lighting concept and the treatment of the doors to offices and stairwells.
Together with a low-energy and low-tech concept and a flexible-grid layout, the new office space reflects and caters to contemporary requirements. The spatial program also includes a bicycle room on the ground floor, complete with e-bike charging station, plus an underground parking lot and an adjacent pavilion converted into three studio apartments.
