3 Men & Studio Illumine

In 2012, Studio Illumine was founded by Azlan Nazam at the time when there was a vacuum in the market for lighting design in sector/fields such as office, healthcare, retail...

2012年，一昱灯光设计工作室由Azlan Nazam创立，当时照明设计市场在办公、医疗、零售等行业领域仍是一片汪洋…

He first started out as a designer and lighting designer for Robarts Interiors. He then furthered his studies and went to Hoschule Wismer to pursue his MA, in Architecture and Lighting Design ( or was he really there for a lady……?)

他最初是作为Robarts 室内设计师兼灯光设计师。随后，他继续深造前往Hoschule Wismer攻读建筑与照明设计硕士学位。（还是说他是为了一个女孩儿而去的呢….?）

Azlan then returned to China and was ready to offer the Shanghai Market all that he has learned and create lighting design for corporate, retail etc. like it has never had before.

随后Azlan回到中国，准备用自己储备的知识来开发上海市场，并为企业、零售等行业创造别出心裁的照明设计。

Eric Zhang, a Project Manager and a former colleague of Azlan at Robarts Interiors joined him right from the onset of SI.

Eric Zhang是Robarts室内设计的项目经理，也是Azlan的前同事，在SI刚成立的时候就加入了。

It was a great duo but they needed a 3rd person to complete the “

TRES AMIGOS

” thus, Carlos Gonzalez Galan. He too like Azlan completed his MA, in Architecture and Lighting Design at Hoschule Wismer. Not only did Azlan and Carlos bond at a shindig one night over free drinks and bites but over workshops they did during their stint at Hoschule Wismer, transporting and carrying lighting fixtures, connecting wires, and installing all these fixtures in the middle of cold snowy nights in Germany. (no wonder they needed to drink some drinks to keep themselves warm!) They have imparted this hands-on practice or “getting down & dirty” work with the rest of the team in Shanghai (excluding the drinking part.)

这是了不起的二人组，但也需要第三个人的加入来完成这段“

三友之旅

”，刚好，Carlos Gonzalez Galan在这时出现。他与Azlan一样完成了硕士学位，在Hoschule Wismer学习建筑和照明设计。一天晚上，Azlan和Carlos 在Hoschule Wismer的工作坊因免费的饮料和小食而结缘，在德国寒冷的雪夜里运送和搬运照明设备、连接电线，并安装所有这些固定装置。（难怪他们需要喝点饮料来保暖！）他们在上海与其他团队成员一起传授了这种实践经验或称之为“getting down & dirty”的工作方法（但这不包括一起享用饮品的环节）。

A blast from the past 15 years ago back in Germany! Can you spot Azlan? 

15年前的德国爆炸！你能认出Azlan吗？

It is apparent that Carlos and Azlan, are a little bit mischievous but that’s the reason why Eric is there to reel them in, they jokingly say. As a Project Manager, Eric always has to be punctual, disciplined, a good leader and a good communicator specially when he has to say “Come on Azlan & Carlos, stop goofing around! Time to work!” They good-humoredly add!

很明显Carlos和Azlan有些调皮，这也是为什么Eric会在那里与他们一起并肩作战，他们开玩笑说。作为一个项目经理Eric总是会守时，有纪律，是一个好的领导者和沟通者，特别是当他说 “拜托Azlan还有Carlos, 别胡闹了，上班时间到了”的时候！他们幽默风趣的补充道！

In all seriousness, they have different things to offer to Studio Illumine but that’s why it works.

他们都有丰富的想法和创意提供给一昱灯光设计工作室，让工作室一直在运转。

Does having 3 guys as Upper Management work?

三个人担任高层管理是否有效？

Carlos:

We are 3 guys with different outlooks and skill sets but it is those differences that make the relationship work. We do have disagreements sometimes but it serves more like a check and balance and at the end we only want the business to become successful.

Carlos：

我们是三个有着不同观点和技能的人，但正是这些差异使我们的关系得以维系。我们有时确实有分歧，但这更像是一种平衡，因为我们最终都只希望业务成功。

What values do you think makes SI work?

你认为SI的价值观是什么？

Azlan:

Teamwork! Some people founded their companies and call them after themselves. I find this strong expression of identity could limit team collaboration and contribution as to an extend, they see it as ‘your’ company. At SI, Carlos, Eric and I are all equal contributors. None of us have massive egos or want to be the sole rockstar. We all want SI to do well. We work better as a team.

Azlan：

团队合作！有些人创立了自己的公司，会以自己的名字命名。我发现这样可能限制团队的合作和贡献，在某种程度上，他们认为这是“你的”公司。但是在一昱灯光设计工作室，Carlos，Eric和我都是平等的贡献者。我们中没有人想一人独大，也不想成为唯一的摇滚明星。我们都希望一昱灯光设计工作室能够做强做好。因此我们配合的很好。

How do you see SI in 5 years?

SI的未来5年愿景是什么？

Eric:

We want to remain to be a good-sized company in Shanghai from about 8-10 people. We want to continuously be known for the work that SI delivers to our clients.  

Eric：

我们希望在上海维持一个合适规模的公司，大约有8-10人。希望SI会因我们的客户项目案例和服务变得更值得关注。

Will SI open in other cities?

SI会在其他城市设立办公室吗？

Eric:

We will let the market dictate if we will open branches in the other cities.

Eric：

我们会让市场来决定这一切。

The 3 men’s talent in lighting design and innate differences have served the company well. It has resulted in a steadily growing business.

三位小伙子在照明设计这一块天赋异禀，使得公司业务也在稳步增长。

Studio Illumine and the 3 guys are grateful for the continued support given to them by their clients since 2012.

They are also grateful to their staff for their dedication that contributed to the success of SI.

As the guys and SI travel the road to success, they will keep on spreading the important value of lighting in good design.
