The year 2020 started off with an unusual beginning, but time keeps moving forward at its own pace. Half a year has passed in a glance and it’s time for our Summer Quarterly.
In the past three months, Place Design Group has completed some new projects. The pandemic has had impacts on work progress, but as we always say, “innovation can be created in the face of adversity”. During this time, we’ve had more in-depth thinking about the work we engage in.
IDEAS SERIES #1 - Ideas to Engage in the Face of Social Distancing: A 'Big-Bug' Offensive
IDEAS SERIES #2 - Now More Than Ever: The Increasing Value of Our Parks and Open Spaces
IDEAS SERIES #3 - The Increased Value of Green Space for the Socially Isolated
Meantime, as for actual project works, such as in Australia, we’re also seeing more public realm projects receiving development approval and entering the planning and design stages.
Social distancing has made us craving more for the outdoor as well as human interaction and connection. Our Design Director Sue Wang received an interview from the Australia China Business Council Queensland Branch (ACBC QLD) and talked about what we're thinking about green spaces as a result of the pandemic. Stay tuned for our repost of the article published in ACBC QLD Winter Newsletter. We look forward
to seeing more public realm projects come into completion and creating great places for people.

The One Skyvilla Display Area Has Completed Construction
The One Skyvilla from Shanghai Construction Group has completed the construction of the display area in May.
The One Skyvilla is located at the center of Hexi CBD in Nanjing. The design of the display area entrance emphasizes the concept of “seclusion”, creating a quiet space through a simple yet detailed feature wall, as well as a mirror water feature with a feature crepe myrtle tree. Internally the sunken courtyard is the centerpiece of the display area and is encircled by clear glass walls. Two individual VIP rooms project out beyond the line of the architectural edge to further add to the spatial complexity of the courtyard.
The centralized rotating sculpture made of stainless steel appears to “float” on the large mirror water feature which matches the project concept of “The One”, water and art integrated together. The curved staircase in the corner of the courtyard provides both pedestrian passage and EVA function and its combination with a mature Chinese tallow tree creates a dialogue between the artificial and the natural, the horizontal and the vertical.

A New Splash Park in the City of Canterbury Bankstown
Greenacre Splash Park is set to become the premier destination for zero-depth water inclusive play for the City of Canterbury Bankstown municipality in Sydney. The all-abilities water splash park will activate the currently underutilized north-east corner of Roberts Park with an exciting, year-round community space that will entice visitors from across the Metropolitan Sydney area.
The iconic water play experiences will include adventure and discovery play elements with architecturally designed amenities buildings that support a great day out for people of all ages and abilities. Prepared by Place Design Group, the concept design draws inspiration from the Aboriginal Dreamtime story of ‘Tiddalick the Frog’, which will act as a thread connecting all sections of the play space and water play areas. This will weave an imaginative and educational narrative about water, creeks, billabongs, native animals and connection to country. The project has just finished community consultation and is expected to start construction in early 2021.

Domic Wins the AILA QLD Award of Excellence
The Sunshine Coast eco mansion, Domic, takes out the 2020 Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture Queensland (AILA QLD) Award of Excellence for Gardens.
Created in collaboration with the NRA Collaborative, Domic (Russian for House of Domes) is an off-the-grid eco lair on the doorstep of Noosa National Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The project explored bespoke designs and innovations in green roof and green wall systems, so that the landscape could be seamlessly integrated with the architecture. Putting landscape architecture in the driving seat of high-end residential design, the project integrated the landscape typologies of the Sunshine Beach sand dunes with materials, colours, habitat and vegetation to engender a primal sense of belonging to the place. This project was initially created by James Birrell Design Lab which have now merged with Place Design Group.
