Hangzhou Center is located on the renowned Wulin Square in Hangzhou, named after the Wulin Gate. The name Wulin Square has its origins from the Yuhangs in the Southern Song Dynasty, passing through various official gates, and finally being named after the Wulin Gate, which continues to be used to this day. Wulin Gate serves as the waterway gateway of the Grand Canal in Hangzhou, and several urban planning changes in Hangzhou have originated from this point. Wulin Square has also, at times, become the absolute center of modern urban life in Hangzhou.

Hangzhou, named after the West Lake and thriving due to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, has its landscape design at the core of Hangzhou Center. The design balances the usability of each functional unit, makes restrained and effective choices amid complex considerations of location, culture, and form. The challenge lies in using limited strokes to immerse the city in the flavor of Hangzhou, expressing a modern charm. The landscape concept of clouds, mountains, and flowing water captures and interprets the stories about the West Lake and the Grand Canal in Hangzhou, with three sides embraced by clouds and mountains and one side by the city.

The overall composition of the landscape space includes a city public square serving as a ceremonial venue, the welcoming drop-off area for the Four Seasons Hotel, a ceremonial entrance shared by the office tower and commercial entrance, and a rooftop garden shared by the 8th-floor commercial and hotel spaces for gatherings.

The city public square adopts a concept of alternating open and closed spaces. At the urban street corners, subway arrivals, and the main entrance, a sense of ceremony naturally unfolds, presenting an open spatial attitude along the flowing lines.

The square itself forms an enclosed state through a grove of zelkova trees and elevated planting pools. This helps obscure the complex and dense above-ground facilities on the site, creating a complete landscape boundary internally. This design engages in a dialogue with the main building and surrounding structures.

In the selection of landscape elements, the expression of tree arrays on three sides resembling cloud-shrouded mountains, the depiction of West Lake water in the circular square, the continuous terraced platforms with long-textured greenery and stone components at the boundaries, the repeated lotus pond scenes, and the artistic stone seats scattered under zelkova trees—all contribute to achieving a synthesis of small scenes with a grand atmosphere, small details with a rich cultural essence, and small spaces with the broader cultural context of Hangzhou.

The harmony of movement and stillness, the combination of large-scale circular spaces, and the integration of small-scale spaces along the edges form a versatile urban public space that caters to various needs such as daily urban relaxation, public events, reconfiguration of commercial scenes, promotion of business activities, and showcasing of brands.

The plaza shared by the office area and the south-facing commercial entrance, arranged under a grove of ginkgo trees in the resting area, maintains spatial continuity. This allows for shared relaxation between commercial and office spaces while preserving the connectivity of the space, enabling each business format to have its distinct spatial domain.

Defined as the gathering rooftop on the 8th floor, two straight-line elevators are designed as lightweight architectural gateways with canopies. They connect the north and south, providing access to the Four Seasons Hotel’s Chinese restaurant and the commercial dining area. The first impression upon reaching the eighth floor is set to be the city skyline seen beyond the water surface. Between the interactive water features and the observation platform, a rooftop market square is arranged as a commercial hub.
