San Francisco is energy and change. Is the pulse of cultures that color its streets, art and history.

A culture based and created by humans has to rediscover its center and purpose in man. A city conceived as everybody would like to live it, as you would like to live it.

You as a YOUman.

Our project is designed for the population, yet also managed by the population. It is not a static system, but it can contract and expand, pulsing according to people’s needs.

The project is intended primarily for people who already live in the area, especially those in need. We do not foreclose access to people of upper-middle social class, but we prefer to focus on the weaker sectors and favor an urban improvement that starts from the inside.

Nevertheless all sectors of the population are involved. The planning includes incentives for those who help the system development: the owners of apartments provide people with accommodations as an emergency basis in crucial situations, like the search for a job, while hotel facilities are intended for longer stays.

This creates a network of homes meant to avoid the phenomena of abandonment and homelessness (San Francisco counts 10000 homeless with annual growth of 20%).

Incentives, such as energy regeneration and the creation of connections between buildings, are not only addressed to owners, but also improve the structuring of the whole district.

Fire stairs, of which each building is equipped, are no longer devices to be used occasionally but become real connection means, linked to pedestrian bridges to create a network of interrelated passages and paths.

An underground system receives and disposes of waste, so that garbage is not in sight and the perception of urban quality improves significantly.

The livability of urban spaces is enhanced by an internal tramway network in order to revitalize all neighborhood areas and discourage car use. The air circulation created by this controlled traffic and by winds is captured by special ducts in buildings and converted into electricity by domestic wind power systems.

These strategies, combined with those at urban and building scale, result in a better life quality and a considerable reduction of energy consumption.

The spreading of green and the consequent reduction of carbon dioxide, moreover, have a positive effect on the mood of people.

Urban gardens also have important economic and social functions, since the resulting products can be sold in corner markets, encouraging the circulation of local economy and improving food quality.

Connections and common areas are not the only social catalysts: aggregation and identity are also promoted by street art, as fronts, advertising billboards and other surfaces make room for a modern, multicultural and ever-changing expression of the beat generation.
