For multi-brand fashion retailer SolSol's Hangzhou presence, Say Architects carved out an 'urban oasis' that provides shoppers with an accessible experience.
Key features
Acknowledging the sometimes-stressful pace of city living, the designers looked to bring a 'sunny' space to fruition. The shopping-mall store spotlights SolSol's 'hyper-curatorial approach' with a terrace-like floorplan that takes advantage of the site's fan shape. The Say Team handled the spatial canvas like a landscape, creating a green-tiled entrance in the central axis inviting to passing consumers. An array of columns clad in lacquer, wood, granite and jade further supports the sense-enticing use of materiality. Statement furniture like a tiger-striped cabinet and a monolithic bar counter punctuate the eye-catching main area.
Adjacent to the retail zone is a café conceived like a desert, contrasting the energetic urban vibe of the entry. Earth-tone paving leads to the hospitality space, which is appropriately clad in neutral finishes. It's centred around a long bench seat where individuals or groups of shoppers can sit back and relax.
Frame's take
As we'll explore in our forthcoming Jun-Jul issue Frame 146, post-pandemic stores are becoming museums for touch. 'After a prolonged period of touch deprivation, the impulse to experience the physicality of goods is reinvigorating offline retail,' writes retail editor Eva Gardiner. This trend makes itself clear at SolSol, the design of which makes clever use of materials to engage shoppers' visual and tactile perception. The eclectic range of textures and patterns in the retail space contrast harmoniously with the stripped-back look of the café, a juxtaposition which only heightens the senses.
