BURNT CORK
While moving to Portugal, Noé drove through the dramatic fires of summer 2017. This visceral experience resonated deeply. The second collection of Made in Situ pays tribute to Portuguese Cork, and is an ode to the resilience of material, of people, of process. Each piece of furniture contains and exhibits the marks of its history.
overview
From calcined bark to fine grain, from rawness to fluid curves evoking a caress, the Burnt Cork collection plays with dichotomies. Discarded burnt cork is transformed into custom gradient blocks, then carved to reveal a tactile & sculptural creation.

系列
THE COLLECTION
The blocks are specifically composed in a defined gradient of cork granules between coarse and fine. Their structure gives birth to the design. All the collection flows upwards in the same direction, a raw gradation from natural catastrophe to fluid anthropomorphic curves. “A parallel could be made with the Phoenix rising from the ashes.” Noé purposefully chose to keep the pure form of the granulated block visible as far into the objects as possible. At the bases of the furniture, where the granules are larger and the raw material exposed, the charcoal from the burnt cork is present; this tactility connects directly to the DNA of the material itself.

The bases are vertical, allowing for the best exposure of this gradient. These pieces invite one to experience the material transition at every angle. The distances between the vertical blocks impede or favour the passage of light, a movement ever-present in structure and stillness. This tension in perpendicularity is the expression of the collection. The horizontal culmination of all the pieces reveals their use, softly inviting an interaction with the human body.

椅子
CHAIRS
The tangible rigidity of the base of each of the 3 chairs morphs into curved shapes to welcome the body. The first piece that Noé designed was the Chaise Longue; this opened up the path for the rest of the collection, evolving and morphing first into the lounge chair and then the chair.

桌子
TABLES
The 3 tables are a play on positioning, architecturally juxtaposing the vertical and horizontal, calling for a visual interaction with the rough blocks that structurally hold the soft fluidity of the upper-most surface.

凳子
THE STOOL
Perched on three legs, the stool morphs gradually from visible bur- nt cork into an organic top. The smallest piece of the collection is probably the one that best crys- tallizes the essence of the collection.
