The LG Twin Towers consist of two 30-storey Grade-A office towers, with a retail podium, rising 140 meters into the Beijing skyline and connecting underground to the Yonganli subway station. The mixed-use project comprises a total area of 140,680 m², including 82,645 m² of floor space featuring a diverse tenant mix. Originally built for South Korea’s LG Group, the buildings were purchased in 2020 by GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, and CLOU was commissioned to design a social gathering spot that will transform the project into a three-dimensional urban courtyard oasis.
Despite being an impressive work of architecture, in a prime setting, the interior of the Twin Towers was outdated. The interior, designed with a circulation focus, was very dark, with a low ceiling mass, so CLOU designed an urban regeneration plan to convert it into a bright, user-centered space that will be enticing for people frequenting the buildings.
Urban comfort
The project encompasses all internal public spaces, including elevator lobbies, corridors, washrooms, and a basement level. Level B1, connecting to the subway station, featured a transport-oriented design intended to shepherd commuters into the office towers. Rising above Level B1, a series of floors at the base of the towers form an atrium featuring retail, hospitality, and wellness services. Above the atrium, all of the upper levels are occupied by office space.
The existing small and partitioned spaces were inconducive to social interaction, and CLOU’s primary focus was to open up the spaces to create a wide-open atrium as a focal point of a shared social space. They embarked on a plan of revitalization to bring the project’s internal ambiance in line with other fast-moving developments in the district, ensuring relevancy for the LG Twin Towers as an attractive social setting.
The existing atrium space featured enclosed escalators that were designed uniquely for passage and circulation to the office towers. CLOU began a transition by making key incisions to free up all of the atrium’s enclosed spaces, setting the foundations of the three-dimensional courtyard vision. New, open escalators and stairways will provide overviews of the entire space, generating a social vibe that was non-existent in the original design.
