Kastner went on to compare Therrien’s oversize furniture sculptures with his composition of 888 red objects for 

Red Room

, 2000–2007, which were all packed into a gallery’s closet and on view through two Dutch doors, as “a kind of strategically self-inflicted wound that exposes the obsessive innards that lie behind the impeccable surfaces of the artist’s outsize vision.”

Therrien was born in Chicago in 1947 and studied at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he joined the city’s burgeoning art scene in the 1970s and remained for the rest of his five-decade career.

Robert—Bob to his friends—spent most of his time researching and making art at his studio, which grew to be a fabled fixture in downtown Los Angeles and straddled the line between fantasy and reality, like much of his work.”
