2018年度最佳公共艺术项目

公共艺术已经成为世界各地城市创意的重要组成部分。它们坐落在城市空间中，旨在形成自身对城市的影响力，为从根本上改变社区与其周边环境的互动方式创造了可能性。在最佳公共艺术项目的第三届评选中，全球创意设计工作室UAP与五位具有影响力的策展人合作，共同确定了2018年度最佳公共艺术项目。这些项目反映了艺术家所强调的、在当地环境和国际社会一直以不同方式反复出现的发展趋势和主题。

Public art has become an essential creative component to cities around the world. Sited in civic spaces and designed to create impact, it carries with it the potential to fundamentally change the way community interacts with place. In its third iteration, global creative studio and foundry UAP, in collaboration with five influential curators have identified the top public art projects of the year, reflecting trends and recurring themes that artists are addressing in different ways both locally and internationally.

The highlighted projects intersect a broad range of forms and scale and reflect the reputation of the world-class curators who each have given their top two recommendations. Contributing to this year’s list are:

Their cumulative list, as enumerated below, includes public art works noted for their innovation, aesthetic engagement and exhilarating scope, at the same time exploring thematic threads that reflect the current state of the world.

Natasha Smith said, “Following a stellar year of public art in 2017 with numerous major biennials and triennials world-wide featuring works that seemed very hard to top, 2018 really manages to impress. Our selection captivates the eye, grabs the heart, stirs the spirit and brings plenty of smiles whilst offering a barometer for what is truly public and for what is reflective of 2018 where anything goes.”

She added, “We have so enjoyed receiving inputs from the contributing curators to build this top list and the result is so worthwhile. We are delighted to be able to present a dynamic list that ranges from political and emotionally charged works to bold, and delightfully playful pieces, each memorable and distinctive.”

Ineke Dane talked about the inspiring nature of the projects put forward, noting that “seen independently and collectively, the breadth in the 2018 list expands notions of what traditionally would be termed ‘public art’, from paintings to entire biennales and buildings. In terms of trends, we can see that there is no longer any restriction between the creative disciplines: the trend is that there is no trend; it’s a liberation.”

策展人在UAP发表的评论：

在制定这份名单时，对策展人唯一的要求是任何提名的作品都必须是对大众开放的。因为只有这样，才能真实地反映在过去的这一年中，你所喜爱的项目和其原因。项目无论大小、无论颜色、无论艺术家的形象、无论如何，只要喜爱就可以。

Curators comments at UAP:

The only qualifier to our contributing curators in the development of this list, was that any works nominated had to be publicly accessible. It really was a case of tell us what you love from the past year and why (no matter the size, no matter the colour, no matter the artist profile, no matter what!).

This naturally resulted in a deeply diverse list of works. It is hard to define a noteworthy trend or theme amongst this eclectic collection outside the more common place themes relevant to the majority of contemporary public artwork being commissioned, such as political commentary, community engagement, social engagement, place making considerations and so on. This was a very democratic process, with five contributing individual curators from around the globe along with UAP’s curatorial team, providing two recommended works each to form the Best of Public Art list for 2018. This wasn’t a list put together by one curator, shaped to a predetermined (or post justified) vision or theme. We were eager to formulate a list from great thinkers – leaders in the field – and to take it at face value. Is there a trend? We challenge that the trend for public art in 2018 is, that there is no trend. However, boundaries, definitions, mediums, practices and so forth are becoming well and truly elastic and blurred.
