The new store of OOTOKU is located by the street in Fortune area, Chengdu. The design of the new store makes different from the past style of OOTOKU, using stone and metal as main materials, creating a sense of heavy atmosphere overall. OOTOKU chose the story of wine and yakiniku as the core design concept to create a new style.
Exterior facade
The exterior facade of the store is decorated with natural granite, and the irregularly distributed square sections appear rough and interesting. There is a square hole in the middle of the wall, and the warm light shines through it, making people can’t help but want to explore the interior of the restaurant.
The store facade is decorated with natural granite, and the irregularly distributed square cuts look rugged but interesting. There is a small square hole in the middle of the wall, from which the warm light comes out and makes people want to take a glimpse at the interior of the restaurant from the hole.
By opening the door of the restaurant, the warm light of the interior contrasts with the dim wall of the facade, filling the restaurant with a warm atmosphere. Through the stone door and grille, the silhouettes of the diners are hazy visible, and the warm light inside the restaurant neutralizes the coldness of the black stone, which is low profile but unforgettable.
The restaurant uses full-height stainless steel partitions to separate the space and distinguish different functional areas. The designer deconstructs the barley elements and integrates the wheat ears pattern of the grille, blocking the view and balancing the feeling of black stone and transparent glass.
The interior of the restaurant as a whole is a rectangular space, divided into three sections, each with different functions. The designer lowers the brightness of the space and highlights the space hierarchy by local lighting.
The front of the interior is dominated by private rooms, with different heights on both sides of the passageway. The heavy dark stone on both sides and the lightwhite glass hanging are intertwined to bring a strong visual impact on the diners. The overhanging milky white glass is integrated with the transparent ultra-white glass, which is delicate between the layers, protecting the privacy and making the space transparent but subtle.
The stone booths on the other side of the passage also have been much accounted of design details by the designer. Thick granite with various colors of stained glass in a picturesque disorder. With the vague flash of human shadows through the stone gap, the overall space is small but interesting.
Stepping into the middle section and coming across a panoramic scene suddenly. The space in the middle section is divided into the itamae sushi area and scattered dining area, the atmosphere is more open and free than the front section of the restaurant. As a classical presentation of Japanese cuisine, the itamae sushi bar is placed at the core of the space.
The middle section is composed of independent unit blocks. To meet more usage needs, the designer divides the middle section into two different sized spaces. The large area is presented as a semi-open room, which not only shows the structural layers of the front of the itamae sushi area but also makes diners appreciate the chef’s exquisite craftsmanship while tasting delicious food.
The rear section is the same as the middle section, and the design combines both the private room and the scattered dining area. The movable tables and chairs in the scattered dining area can meet the dining needs of different numbers of guests. The combination of wood plates and copper plates are used as the wall of the private room’s interior, have trenchancy compare between the rough and delicate materials.
The wall of the scattered dining area combines the rammed earth wall of a traditional Japanese tea house with modern art texture paint, using malt with paint to give a brand new interpretation of the traditional rammed earth wall.
For the VIP room, the designer gives up complicated decorative materials, selects materials from the folklife of Chengdu, by visiting old blocks to acquire discarded door panels as wall decoration. The door panel after cutting and coloring still maintains the original texture while meeting the requirements of the restaurant. The combination of irregular wood panels and distressed copperpanels, with the rough surface of the wood panels contrasting with the delicate texture of the copper panels, brings both a warm texture and a hard visual effect to the space.
