大杂院里来了一群年轻人，想利用和翻新一些空着的房子，建立青年旅社计划。拥挤狭小的院子已被居民搭建的小厨房或库房占满，自行车停在其中，杂物四处堆放，无下脚之地——这是当下北京大杂院混居模式下的常态。年轻人的到来，会使院子更加拥挤。

A small space that “GIVEN BACK” to the courtyard

A group of youngsters came up with the idea to renovate some empty houses of Hutong yard into hostel. The yard was already occupied by many small kitchens built by the neighbors, stashed and parked bicycles, as well as piles of random junk leaving a tiny space barely to walk through. This is nowadays the common situation of the living environment in Beijing’s Hutong yard.

The arrival of the young people would serve to further congest the yard, so we needed to find a way to live peacefully with the neighbours.

为了与老街坊和平共处，设计选定了“退让”的谦虚态度。通过一组带有床、写字台和门的可滑动立面，改变房间和室外面积配比，在一些时候，压缩客房室内面积，把一定面积还给院子，用以“置换”一部分邻居私搭厨房库房所占据院子的面积。给拥挤的大杂院一个喘息的空间。

Therefore this design chooses to ‘given back”’ and be humble by using a set of sliding walls that each houses a bed, desk, and door, and serves to continuously change the proportion of indoor and outdoor space accordingly based on the current need. As such, when there are not many guests at the hostel, some space can be given back to the yard by sliding the doors around to “compensate” for the area already occupied by the kitchens, and when the hostel is full there is still enough space to accommodate all guests. This will create breathing space in the chaotic Hutong yard life.

这部分还给院子的面积可以作为公共休闲空间使用，可以作为：茶座、棋牌角、聊天室……也可以用来停放邻居们的自行车，也可能成为年轻人招待老街坊的室外吧台。

The “given back” space beneath the roof can be used as a public leisure area? like a tea table a card room or a bar, in addition to a space for the neighbors to store their bicycles.

样板间落地选定地点和建造过程颇费波折，是在一次次与左邻右舍协商的基础上完成的。其间发生了许多有意思的小故事，有时候我们被迫更换了准备实践的院子，有时候我们不得不因邻居的身体状况停工，有时又会因为与邻居沟通不利而不得不改变

一部分设计（一部分故事，人物）。

On a basis of endless cycles of negotiation with neighbors the siting of the prototype was as difficult as its construction. Many interesting stories happened during the whole process, including the change of the construction site, to be forced to stop work and even modify the original design due to sick complaining and uncooperative neighbours.

现在，一个12平方米的谦虚旅社客房样板间已完工。这个样板间可以最多退出约5平米的面积给院子临时使用。我们也 和一户邻居达成意向，他白天一些时候会利用这块空间联系书法。我们还做了一些面向院子的储藏柜供邻居使用。

Now the construction of the prototype is accomplished, This 12-square-meter hostel could give a maximum of 5 square meters to the yard for temporary use. One of the neighbors has happily agreed to use this place for calligraphy painting during the daytime. Moreover we also built a number of lockers for those who need to put things away.

“谦虚旅社”是北京国际设计周中大栅栏更新计划的领航员项目。在今年的北京国际设计周前后，有第一批3位年轻人试住进去。设计者也会给大家带来继续去年的故事，退让出的院子会作为临时展场。我们也会邀请大家来这里坐坐，和我们聊聊这块还给院子小空间其他的利用可能 。随着试住开展，我们也会发放问卷和做使用记录，为日后复制和完善系统提供依据。随着更多谦虚旅社客房的建立，便会有更多的空间还给大杂院，改善院子环境的同时，也会给老龄化的社区引入年轻化的邻里关系。

Humble Hostel is a “Darshilar Pilot” project exhibited during Beijing International Design Week. The first group of youngsters may live inside and the designer will tell you the story following the last year. The “given back” space will be for humble hostel project exhibition and afternoon tea.

We invite all to come here and chat with us about any other possibility for this tiny “given back” space .

After that we will keep on the hostel try-out make questionaries and collect data for further replication and system perfection. With more “Humble hostels” being built up more space will be given back to the Hutong yard. The aging community could also be infused with health and vibrant neighborhood relations.
