Oh mia bella Madonnina.
The main spire is particularly symbol- ic, with its statue of Mary right at the top, in gilded bronze, cel- ebrated in a folk song ‘Oh mia bella Madun- ina,’ in the city’s dia- lect. (If you can sing it you’re pretty much born and bred Mila- nese, and you know all about the other Mi- lan specialities such as cotoletta alla Mila- nese, busecca, rostin negàa and ‘il happy hour.’ The song’s frst Life.” Each is 120 cm long, 55 cm wide and 87 cm in height, and weighs 13 kg. If you had something as large in your gar- den it would wreak havoc amongst your cabbages… They are blue, a colour that has long had a reli- gious signifcance, used in sacred art for the veil of Mary, Jesus’ gown, and in general to highlight the most sacred per- sonalities in a com- position.
They are made by the Crack- ing Art group, which habitually utilizes presently encased in scaffolding. The project was organ- ized in cooperation with Veneranda Fab- brica del Duomo, the company founded by Gian Galeazzo Vis- conti, Duke of Milan, in 1387 to fnance the construction of the Cathedral – perhaps the oldest company in Europe – and now concerned principally with its maintenance. In recent years, vari- ous events have been organized in and on the Cathedral in or- der to raise fnance, but also as a way of lines translate ap- proximately as: “Oh my beautiful little Ma- donna, shining from afar, you are made of gold and you are so small, you dominate Milan, life is bustling at your feet and the city never stops…’)
To see the snails, you just have to visit the Cathedral rooftops from 8 to 13 October. The visit is possible any day from 9 a.m to 9.30 p.m., with the last ascent beginning at 8.45 p.m. The cost is €12 by lift, €7 if you decide you can take the stairs. It’s a narrow spiral stair- case, but it rewards you with spectacular views of this wonderful Gothic architec- ture and the sculpt- ed decoration on all sides. The swirling leaves on the capi- tals and balustrades run no risk of being consumed by the snails… For further information and tick- ets for Duomo visits, go to the Duomo Info Point in Piazza del Duomo opposite the Arcivescovado, tel.02 7202 3375.
