In order to create a safer and quieter environment, Tongji University completed the “car-free campus” transformation of the Siping Road Campus in 2018. Most of the original parking lot on the campus was abandoned. This project is to reuse the parking space for the campus environment. Micro-updates include a total of 4 parking lots. The project began research and design in 2018, and the construction was completed in May 2019. It is a practice combining design teaching.

With the improvement of the function and service level of the campus, many parking spaces scattered around the building have lost their use value. The university side hopes to transform these hard pavement site, beautify the campus environment and create green space. However, there are practical problems such as limited funds and heavy maintenance management. The project implements a sustainable design concept, fully recycles the resources and elements in the site, respects the memory of the venue, and creates a quiet and comfortable resting place through simple design method, and integrates it into the campus landscape. Combined with the design concept, we give the 4 new spaces names after the original and newly planted trees, namely Platan Square, Magnolia Square, Willow Square and Maple Square.

The venue is the parking lot behind the cafeteria. The south and west sides are the youth teacher dormitory, and the east side is the school power distribution room. The current situation of the site is the parking space full of grass and bricks. The pavement is more ruined. The only thing worth mentioning is that there is a tall platan tree in the northeast corner, and the slanting line from the southwest corner to the northeast corner is the path from the dormitory to the canteen. The design scheme is based on this oblique line, and three square spaces are arranged: a rest space surrounding the plane tree, a stone cage wall on both sides as a semi-enclosed wall and a rest step; then a relatively transparent square garden, which is interlaced with the grid system formed by the boundary of the site, is semi-enclosed by landscape wall, and ensures the transparency of the central site while ensuring the privacy of space. Finally, the entrance space is located in the southwest corner.

The venue is located on the side of Heping Road, the main axis of Siping Road Campus of Tongji University, and the left side of Rui’an Building designed by Academician Dai Fudong. The design attempted to transform the existing parking lot into a resting space for the students. The existing space was too open and the scene of rear side was not good. Therefore, the simple landscape wall method was adopted, and the direction was parallel to the main road and the height was different. The space of the stone cage wall divides the space to create a different degree of privacy, creating a sense of envelopment; on the one hand, organizing spatial sequences to enhance the sense of depth; at the same time, 8 magnolias (4 white magnolia and 4 purple magnolia) planted on both sides. It implies the spatial position of the stone cage wall, which echoes the existing southern magnolia on the left side of the Rui’an Building, increasing the cultural theme of the place.

Willow Square before renovation
The site is the parking lot in front of the existing physics building, and the south side is adjacent to the water system “Tongxin River” of the campus. The design scheme uses the wall to divide the space. In combination with Tingbu, it creates a rich and varied space path in the original rectangular space, and guides the line of sight from the physical building to the waterfront, while the low stone cage wall remains the open visual experience. Small venues set up at the main node, arranging with the seats, offer rest function. The willow trees along the river side are coordinated with the riverside landscape, and the various fields are interspersed with grass flowers to create a rich visual experience.

Maple Square before renovation
The site was originally the secondary entrance plaza and parking space on the west side of the Rui’an Building. It was in disrepair and became a negative space. Taking into account the demand for inter-class breaks proposed by teachers, the existing hard-ground plazas have been expanded, and stone seats and grass belts have been set up to make the space have a certain sense of design. At the same time, in order to express the cultural theme of the graduated Fenglin Festival, the existing vegetation was adjusted to some extent, and Canadian sugar maple was planted on both sides of the square to form the feeling of maple woods.

This design fully recycles the original concrete paving and weeding brick waste, and makes the stone cage wall and the landscape wall. As a new space language in the campus, it adds some novel forms and also has very good demonstration educational function for the students.
