working as part of a consortium comprising construction group BAM and ISS netherland, OMA has been selected to renovate ‘rijnstraat 8′, a governmental office building constructed in 1993. positioned centrally within the dutch city of the hague, the building will accommodate the ministries of foreign affairs, infrastructure and environment, immigration and naturalization services, and the CAO (central agency for the reception of asylum seekers).

the project will transform the existing structure, converting the traditional configuration into adaptable office space for a range of different organizations. developed with the building’s original architect jan hoogstad, the integrated concept revives the existing design while simultaneously catering to modern demands that require more efficiency within central government.

a greater degree of transparency is achieved with glazing replacing solid walls at ground level, while public circulation routes are more clearly defined – connecting the offices within the urban fabric. the property is scheduled to be completed by late 2016, with several organizations moving in by early 2017.
