The pouring of concrete for the roof which is the largest flat surface in the project took about 24 hours. Workers continued on shifts all through the night, carefully finishing the surfaces with hand tools immediately after each batch of concrete was poured in place.
They cheered and celebrated when the day broke and morning sun started to glitter on the freshly finished roof plane, concluding this year's construction before winter settles in.

Chapel of Sound sits in a rocky valley at the foot of Jinshanling Great Wall on the northern boundary of Beijing municipality. It houses a semi-outdoor amphitheater, an outdoor stage, viewing platforms, and supporting spaces. The surrounding mountainous rural area has lost most of its population to the cities in the past couple of decades due to the severe lack of resources including arable land. Chapel of Sound is a pilot project in a scheme that aims to redevelop and vitalize this barren mountain area.
The structure is composed of two interconnected concrete shells. The outer shell has an inverted conic shape so that it touches the ground with the smallest footprint, minimizing the impact on the natural surroundings. The inner shell is shaped primarily by the acoustics, with hard surfaces to bounce off the sounds, and openings on the enclosing surfaces for sound absorption. These carefully planned openings to the sky and the surrounding valley also bring in stunning views and muted sounds of nature, as well as dancing sunlight at different times of the day—all orchestrating an ever-changing symphony of nature inside the concert hall. When there is no performance, one can sit there to quietly observe birds singing and insects chirping, gentle breezes rustling through, or rain falling onto the hard floor and quickly draining away.
Chapel of Sound was awarded a Citation in the 66th annual Progressive Architecture (P/A) Awards, with jury Claire Weisz commented 'it's a different paradigm…, a sound experience that anyone can take part in.'
The building is slated to open in the summer of 2020.
